Finding this book, and, even better, finding the author was life changing. My husband lives with the same rare lung disease that is chronicled in the book. And like Gavin, he was once a triathlete and marathon runner. While those passions have been taken from him and life is full of uncertainty, he now knows two things to be true. First, he is not alone. Second, he will run once again. He just has this one race to finish first. Gavin was gracious enough to document and share his journey so that others could be inspired by his extraordinary message of hope, determination, and tenacity. His book and his inspiration were the ray of light needed during our dark time. We are forever rewarded for the gift he and Julie, as this is her story nearly as much as his, have given to us and so many others. Thank you.Product details

Breathe and Let Go A Lung Transplant Adventure Gavin Maitland 9781608443338 Books Reviews
This is a poignant account of a man's journey through an immense health challenge. He notes that during the times of pain and struggle, sometimes the only thing to do is breathe and let go. This is valuable advice regardless of the challenge. It is inspirational what the doctors and Mr. Maitland have achieved in his bi-lateral lung transplant. It is wonderful that he has been given a second chance to spend time with his loving family.
Breathe and Let Go is the true-life story of a healthy young man who suddenly contracts a lung disease that is basically going to shut him down. He has to fight for his very life - by first finding the cause of his deterioration. It's a mystery story of sorts (you wonder 'can he find out in time?'), told pragmatically. No pitying is required of us, the readers! The writer teaches us a lot about how our bodies work, how the medical system works, how much on our own we are with our health. I was gripped by the story - engaged with his travails and amazed at the end. One marvelous thing about this writer's 'voice' is the occasional self-deprecating, humorous, tart remark that show the character of the human being telling us his story of survival and victory. Bravo!
The book was wonderful...an uplifting and factual read...
The book is well balanced, factual and clear. Not too technical and easy to understand even for medical ignorants, it doesn't do into the melodrama. I found it a very a instructive insight into Gavin's life before and after transplant - great book to appreciate and understand the ordeal of a transplant.
This book was written like the author was talking to me, telling me the story of his horrendous, yet educational journey. It clarifies some of the amazing difficulties without a "poor me" attitude. As a matter of fact, the author is anything but - he's very inspiring. I bought a copy for a friend who's going through some life-threatening health challenges right now as when I told her about it, she thought it would be a good book for her to read. He shows great strength and fortitude is possible under almost impossible circumstances.
This book is extremely informative and encouraging for any person or family going through the transplant process
I am a BOLT (bilateral open lung transplant) myself. This book is reasonably accurate, but the process and emotions vary greatly from patient to patient. Much longer waits now; I waited over 9 months and the whole process lasted exactly 1 year. I made new friends, lost friends, but all-in-all, I was one of the lucky ones (now two years out and strong). This book provides a pretty good glimpse of what to expect, at least at Duke (which can be very different compared to the same process at other transplant centers). Of course, the author is considerably younger than almost all of his double-lung peers. IPF patients normally receive only one lung these days.
